Methods of Computer Networking -

Computer networks can be classified into three broad categories.

Local Area Network (LAN)

A local area network is confined in a relatively small space. It is useful in providing services to a small number of people. The networks in small offices and homes are a few examples of LAN.

networks of small offices and home are also peer-to-peer networks that uses minimal resources and each client shares their resources with other workstations in the network.

Another LAN is a client-server network in which each customer remains connected to the server and each other. Server in client-server networks are of different capacities. There are two types of client-server networks:

  1. single server service they perform just one task, for example, as a file server; and
  2. print server run multiple tasks, such as file server, print server, carrying out calculations and provide information to customers on the basis of the result of the calculations.

Ethernet cables, wireless networks, or other types of cables, such as power lines or telephone can be used to connect computers in a LAN.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

wide range of resources is distributed WAN. These networks covers not only large indoor area, but also internationally. The connectivity of the computers in the branches of a business organization is an example of WAN. But the largest WAN on earth is the Internet, a network of many smaller networks. In addition to the Internet, another huge WAN is Public Switched Telephone Network, which is converging with fast Internet technologies.

Wireless networks (WLAN, WWAN)

A wireless network is based on the transmission of data on sets of radio transceivers. It is basically the same as a LAN or a WAN. The only difference is that there are no wires between hosts (clients) and servers. These types of networks are useful in places where the creation of wired networks is too costly or inconvenient. It uses access protocols IEEE supports LANs. For the connection of remote nodes is the largest satellite communications of various types or cellular radio, or wireless local loops are in vogue. But the speed and the quality of the data transmission varies widely depending on the means of communication used.
